While doing my 100-1 Moments of Supernatural (first video can be seen here, and first blog post explaining the moments can be found here) I saw a lot of John moments, and references to John.
John Winchester has only really been in a hand full of episodes and yet he gets as much love as the main characters, and rightly so, he is after all the Boys father an awesome hunter and a fascinating character. Not to mention Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays him brilliantly.
I thought it might be good to place down some theories I have about Papa Winchester and some of the major things he has done.
'If you can't save Sam, you have to kill him'.
What a lovely request for a father to make to his son. Now during the Fourth Season that sediment was brought up again, mainly in the voicemail message that either the Angel's or that Bitch manipulated. But I think us as a viewers and even the Winchester boys have misinterpreted John's words. From repeat viewing and watching the amazing fifth season, I think it was John saying 'Dean, you have to say yes to Michael, you have to do it to save your brother.'
This might seem as if I am making John out to be the mystical oracle of all things Supernatural and End of the world related, but lets think about it. Yellow Eyes said to John in 'In my time of dying' "You know the truth about Sammy and the special children" to which John answers "I have known for a while."
Now I might be reading too much into a small exchange of words between a Hunter and its Pray (take that as you will). It also brings up the question of How much did John know?
Did he know that they would have Battle of the Psychic Kids? That the winner would open up the doors of Hell? Did he know that doing that would cause Lilith to walk around like the grand pumba? Did he know that the winner of the Battle grand royal would then consume more demon blood to get stronger? Did he know that the winner would then kill Lilith and start the end of the world? Did he know that the psychic kid would then intern become the Vessel of Lucifer?
Or did he know straight off the bat that Sam was going to be the Vessel of Lucifer and Dean the Vessel of Michael? Is that why he trained them up and left Adam (the third brother) off to play monopoly?
He was able to last 100 years in Hell without braking.
We all know that's true, but like everything Supernatural I have a theory about it. I think that John knew what braking would mean. He knew that if he was to draw blood in hell then the shit would hit the Apocalyptic fan. My theory is if you knew caving into Hell would mean the end of the world and the rolls your sons had to take you could pretty much survive anything.
Maybe he knew that when the big Cheese Yellow eyes was to bite it he would be set free from the deal? Would that be why he summoned Yellow eyes instead of a typical Crossroads demon?
I would love to know what you all think about my theories and the questions I have posed. Do you think everything we are finding out now John Winchester knew all along? Or was John Winchester all talk and no knowledge?

I think most people realize now that John knew a heck of a lot more than he ever admitted to his sons. In his own twisted way I think John believed he was protected his sons. I've seen people over the years condemn John for forcing his sons into hunting but what choice did he have? Clearly there would have been no normal life for them after what happened to there mother. Sam was marked from birth. Sooner or later evil would have come for him. At least John did his best to prepare them.
ReplyDeleteAs far as John telling Dean that he may have to kill his brother - most certainly John meant that as a last alternative. He wasn't the sort of man to just throw in the towel and he knew Dean wasn't either. John knew exactly what kind of man Dean was, even if Dean didn't see it himself. And I think that in his heart of hearts he knew that Dean would save his brother in the end.
We know now that the YED wanted John to go to hell and be the one to start the apolcalypse. That would have been the icing on the cake for the demons to have the almighty John Winchester himself bring about the end of the world. But John didn't cave in and I think it was no more complicated than the fact that after everything the demons had put him, Mary, and their boys through, that there was no way in hell he was going to give them the satisfation of watching him break.
I always wonder how John came to know Sam as one of the YED's kids and how did he know Dean has to save Sam if he can't save him. And most importantly, did John know about Mary's past as a hunter?
ReplyDeleteMAY BE, in Back to the Future II, John will overhear Mary's conversation with the boys OR Zachariah sends John into 2020 in order to convince John to convince Dean to say yes (i.e. kill Sam..)
I need coffee..
May be Mary wrote something in her journal, John found it and read it. Mary told John in her journal about the deal.
ReplyDeleteBut it doesn't make sense (I'm contradicting myself from this point on). It was Missouri who told John about Supernatural stuff, that's how he became a hunter. But still, may be John discovered Mary's journal later? But for continuity sake, in the SPN comic, John has no knowledge of Mary's pass.. Hummm...
I need a second coffee..
Well why would he go to Missouri if he didnt think it could help. Maybe he thought Mary was just a fiction writer or something so he sort after Mary.
